Legalization at the Department of Consular Affairs of the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs authenticates a Thai official document, and any certified translation attached to it, so that a foreign authority can rely on it. Documents are normally submitted as originals or as copies certified by the issuing office, together with a translation into a language the receiving authority accepts. Whether an additional embassy endorsement or an apostille is required is decided by the destination country.

Thailand deposited its instrument of accession to the Hague Apostille Convention in 2026, but the Convention enters into force for Thailand on 28 February 2027. As of September 2026, Thai-issued Apostilles are not available. For documents intended for use abroad, check the receiving authority's requirements for the original, translation, MFA legalisation and any further embassy attestation. Step-by-Step MFA Legalization Workflow

The consular workflow below reflects real 2025–2026 practice with the MFA e-Legalization portal and paper counters, including the second-tier embassy step required by non-Hague destinations.

1) Source-document audit
We confirm the original issuer is one the MFA accepts, that copies are dated within six months, and that names and dates match your passport exactly to avoid downstream visa rejection.
2) Certified translation
A translator on the MFA registry produces the target-language version (English, Chinese, Japanese, French, German, Arabic, and more) using MFA-approved templates and signs each page.
3) e-Legalization submission
Scanned originals, translations, and ID are uploaded to the MFA portal. Fees are paid by PromptPay QR or credit card and a queue receipt is returned instantly.
4) MFA verification and stamping
The MFA compares the source signature and seal against its internal registry. Approved files receive the consular Legalization stamp and an electronic receipt with a unique tracking number.
5) EMS return or counter pickup
Documents can be returned by EMS to any Thai address (48 hours) or collected at the MFA counter — we normally consolidate multiple stamps into a single shipment to reduce cost.
6) Second-tier embassy legalization
Non-Hague destinations (China, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Vietnam and others) require the destination embassy in Bangkok to add its own stamp on top of the MFA stamp before the document is accepted overseas.

How long is a legalised document valid?

The MFA stamp itself does not expire, but destination authorities often impose a 3–6 month validity window. For long-lead applications we recommend legalising close to the submission date.

Do I need the original translated by a specific translator?

MFA only accepts translations from translators on its registry. Using a non-registered translator is the most common cause of first-round rejection.
